statia

Sint Eustatius, also known as Statia, is referred to as the “Golden Rock” because of its historical importance as a trading port in the 17th century. This undisturbed island is the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation, providing something for everyone. With no mass tourism, the crystal-clear waters are teeming with life. The nature above water is just as beautiful with a dormant volcano and a variety of trails.

This hidden gem in the Caribbean offers a unique travel experience for those looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination. Visitors can immerse themselves in the island’s rich history by exploring the many historical sites, including the ruins of the old town and the restored Fort Oranje.

What To Expect

Scuba Diving

With crystal clear waters and a thriving marine ecosystem, divers can explore a variety of sites including shipwrecks, reefs and walls. The island’s marine park offers protection to a range of species including sea turtles, rays and sharks, while colorful coral formations provide a beautiful backdrop for underwater photography. Whether you’re an experienced diver or a beginner, Statia offers a unique and memorable diving experience.

While diving, keep your eyes peeled for small blue beads. These beads are important to Statia’s history and are the only artifacts divers are allowed to take, if found. They may also be found topside, so be on the lookout while exploring the island as well.

Keep your eyes out for:

  • Barracuda
  • Seahorses
  • Reef sharks

Conservation efforts

STENAPA

Sint Eustatius is a unique island in that the focus is on ecotourism instead of mass tourism. Economic gain may harm ecological gain and ecological gain is valued more in Statia. The Sint Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA) is a non-governmental organization that protects the high biodiversity found both on land and in sea. The organization protects an area twice the size of the island, including three different areas and a botanical garden.

Their mission is to manage, conserve and restore St. Eustatius’ natural resources and educate the community about its values. The vision is that nature is recognized and treasured as an important resource and is taken into account in the sustainable development of St. Eustatius.

Golden Rock Resort

In its commitment to an eco-consciousness lifestyle, Golden Rock Resort makes use of the following sustainable systems: solar panels to completely power the resort, a reverse osmosis machine turning salt water into clean, drinking water with a capacity to store 240,000 liters and a helophyte filter used to clean dirty water through the use of reed and bamboo to be used for irrigation of the property’s plants and grass.

Culture

Statia was a hub for international trade in the 17th century, leading to a melting pot of cultures that can still be seen today in the food, music and language. The locals, known as Statians, are friendly and welcoming, and their laid-back lifestyle reflects the island’s relaxed atmosphere. The island focuses on ecotourism and preserving the beautiful nature that can be found above and below the water. Despite being a small island, Statia’s culture is rich and vibrant, making it a fascinating destination to explore.

Climb the Quill

This dormant volcano has steep slopes, a lush rainforest and a massive crater at the top. This is a challenging hike but well worth the challenge. Bring sturdy shoes and plenty of water! A trip to Statia isn’t complete without this adventure up the volcano and through the rainforest.

Visit the Miriam C Schmidt Botanical Gardens

On the slopes of the Quill volcano lies the Miriam C Schmidt Botanical Gardens. These gardens are protected by STENAPA and work to conserve, preserve and educate about the biodiversity found on Statia. It provides a haven for the flora and fauna found here and gives visitors the chance to relax and be one with nature.

Blue Bead Hunting

These unique blue, glass beads were Statia’s currency in the 17th century. According to legend, the beads find you, and if you acquire one, you will return to Statia one day. These blue beads are the only artifact that can be taken with you as a souvenir from the island. Be on the lookout for them above and below the surface.
