Utila March 20-27, 2027

Utila map

Utila is a small Caribbean island located off the northern coast of Honduras. It is known for its crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life, making it a popular destination for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. The island is part of the Bay Islands of Honduras and is the smallest of the three major islands.

The island is positioned right on the edge of the Mesoamerican Barrier reef and is surrounded by an abundance of marine life. While diving the clear Caribbean waters, you are bound to see eagle rays, hawksbill sea turtles, nurse sharks, parrotfish, angel fish and seahorses.

What To Expect

Scuba Diving

Utila has over 80 dive sites to choose from, ranging from wreck diving to swim throughs to shallow corals. Utila is also known as one of the whale shark capitals of the Caribbean. It is one of the only places on the planet where whale sharks are documented year-round, so no matter when you travel to Utila, there’s a chance you’ll be lucky enough to swim with one.

Keep your eyes out for:

  • Whale sharks
  • Sea turtles
  • Octopus
  • Snappers
  • Groupers
  • Parrotfish
  • Spotted eagle rays
  • Stingrays

Recommended Specialty Courses

  • Wreck diving
  • Nitrox

Utila

Conservation efforts

One of the leading marine research groups in Utila is The Whale Shark & Oceanic Research Center (WSORC). The center conducts surveys and treats stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), reef fish surveys, lionfish removal dives where every part of the lionfish is used and whale shark education.

WSORC is the only non-profit to have been granted a research permit to study whale sharks by the Honduran Environmental Department. Their team established the Whale Shark Encounter Guidelines to promote responsible eco-tourism. In 2008, these guidelines were passed through the Honduran parliament as the government made more efforts to protect whale sharks from unsustainable tourism practices.

During your stay at the Utila Lodge, marine biologists will give presentations on whale sharks and any other topic you may be interested in during the evenings at the bar. Learn more here.

Dan Stalder

Independent Instructor Trainer & Service Tech

Born and raised in Nebraska, with no thoughts, dreams, or bucket lists including scuba diving or the underwater world. I became a certified Open Water Scuba Diver in August 2006. My only regret is that I did not start much earlier in my life!!  I instantly had a new passion in life, and now I am blessed to have the privilege of introducing others to the incredible world of scuba diving. I have been a Scuba Store manager since February of 2012, and am currently an SSI Instructor Trainer with the Platinum Pro 1000 recognition. When I am not diving, there is still a good chance you will find me outdoors. I enjoy motorcycles, forestry, hunting, horses, campfires, antiques, cooking, and working on my acreage.

The Lodge

Utila Lodge is the largest built-out-over-the-water structure on the entire island. No matter where you are on resort property, the Caribbean is splashing just a few feet below you. We are located right in the center of town which gives our guests easy access to the local shops and restaurants. That said, since we are out over the water, our in town location does not compromise our guests privacy or peace of mind.

Welcome to Paradise!

The Rooms

Our 8 rooms have queen and double sized beds. Each room has it’s own private screened in porch with hammocks for you to relax on. The bathrooms have dual vanities and hot water showers. All have air conditioning, ceiling fans, wifi, and cable TV. The amenities provide a perfect rustic Caribbean setting for your vacation. Housekeeping is provided every day and you can even have coffee delivered to your room every morning.

Welcome Home!

The Dock

The infamous Utila Lodge dock is large enough to land a helicopter on it…seriously, it’s been done before. Beyond being a helipad, it serves as an incredible recreational area. Whether it’s morning yoga, snorkeling around the artificial reef or catching a magnificent Utila sunset, it’s really the perfect place to enjoy yourself. After the sun goes down, you can even enjoy the company of eagle rays swimming about.

The Bar

The Utila Lodge Sunset Bar and Grill is conveniently facing west so that you can enjoy your cold drinks while watching the breath-taking nightly sunsets that the island has to offer. The bar is stocked with local beers and features a number of Caribbean cocktails to get you in a tropical state of mind. It is here that you can swap stories with divers from all over the planet or catch a game on our 40″ flat screen TV. You can also have a running bar tab for the duration of your stay.

The Dining

We have a full service kitchen from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm with a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. For our all inclusive guests, we have loaded buffet options for all three meals of the day. We’ll make sure you never get tired of the cooking by ensuring that each meal is different. The food is delicious and will give you plenty of energy for those long days of diving and adventure. ¡Buen Provecho!

The Boat

The Sea Sprite is a 42 footer made specially for diving. It is perfect large groups as there is plenty of space for everyone and their gear. The crows nest sits 24 feet above the surface making it a great lookout point for spotting Whale Sharks and pods of dolphins. The boat is stocked with a water cooler and freshly cut watermelon to keep you satisfied during those long days of diving. It is from this boat that you will make memories that’ll last a lifetime.
